Goddess of the Tibetan plateau - the Kunlun

The Kunlun Mountains are one of the longest mountain chains in Asia, extending more than 3000km. It has been a major deity in Chinese classics and a Sacred Site to the Tibetans. People perform an ancient ritual when passing thru, by throwing amulets of mantra in the air and chanting a prayer for protection and blessings. In our month-stay at the conservation(Kekexili Mtn Patrol), we perform the ritual to ask the Goddess of Kunlun to gift us the luck of finding water and safety against predators.

The Xinsheng lake translates to the lake of "Birth" or "New born". It was one of the many beautiful regions in Kekexili. This Birth lake displayed such beauty through the seasons, and because of the unpredictable weather change, one usually cannot tell the correct season in an image - This image was taken in early Summer, the icy surface of the lake has melted revealing its brilliant turquoise water.
